Jane Street Group, one of the most formidable quantitative trading firms on Wall Street, has disclosed a 5.0% stake in Hertz Global Holdings. The filing, a Schedule 13G submitted to the SEC on July 2, landed with all the drama of a spreadsheet update, but the sheer size of the position makes it worth paying attention to.
The firm reported beneficial ownership of 15,802,256 shares of Hertz common stock as of June 26.
Breaking down the position
The ownership structure tells an interesting story about how Jane Street operates internally. The bulk of the stake, some 14,153,179 shares representing 4.5% of Hertz, sits under Jane Street Global Trading, LLC. The remaining 1,649,077 shares, accounting for the other 0.5%, belong to Jane Street Capital, LLC.
Both entities report shared voting and dispositive power over their respective holdings.
The Schedule 13G designation is the critical detail here. Unlike a Schedule 13D, which signals an investor’s intent to influence or change a company’s direction, a 13G is essentially raising your hand and saying, “We own a lot of this stock, but we’re not here to cause trouble.”
What this means for investors
The passive nature of the filing means investors shouldn’t expect Jane Street to push for strategic changes at Hertz. There won’t be proxy fights or demands for board seats.
For Hertz specifically, the filing arrives during what has been a turbulent period for the company. The rental car giant has been navigating its post-bankruptcy recovery, working through the aftermath of an aggressive and ultimately costly push into electric vehicles, and trying to stabilize operations. Notably, Hertz completed a $100 million follow-on equity offering in June 2026, and activist investor Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square, which initially disclosed a stake of around 4.1%, has reportedly expanded its position to a significant 19.8%, resulting in a sharp stock price rally.
