Some players spend entire careers chasing a World Cup moment. Kerim Alajbegovic got his at 18 years and 276 days old, and he made it count.
On June 24, 2026, the Bosnian attacking midfielder scored what witnesses described as a screamer against host nation Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The goal helped Bosnia secure a victory that pushed them into the round of 32 and sent Qatar home from their own tournament. For Alajbegovic, it also made him the youngest player in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s history to score in a World Cup match.
The kid from Leverkusen’s academy who became a World Cup goalscorer
Born on September 21, 2007, Alajbegovic grew up sharpening his craft in Bayer Leverkusen’s youth academy before making his way to RB Salzburg, the Austrian Bundesliga club with a reputation for turning promising teenagers into polished professionals.
The 2025-26 season was his breakout. Thirteen goals and four assists across the campaign put him firmly on the radar of clubs well beyond Austria’s borders.
His international trajectory has been equally steep. Alajbegovic made his senior debut for Bosnia on September 6, 2025, against San Marino, and scored in that match. Bosnia won 6-0.
From there, he became a fixture in Bosnia’s World Cup qualification push. His most consequential contribution before the tournament itself came during the playoff shootout against Italy, where he converted a decisive penalty to help send Bosnia through.
What the goal against Qatar actually means
Bosnia’s win eliminated Qatar from the tournament and moved the Bosnians into the round of 32. Alajbegovic had made his tournament debut on June 12, 2026, against Canada. The Qatar goal came twelve days later.
At 18 years and 276 days, he became the youngest Bosnian to score at a World Cup.
