Kraken’s valuation hits $20B after Citadel Securities investment

1 month ago 23

Kraken just joined the $20 billion club, and the company that wrote its ticket might surprise exactly no one who’s been watching Wall Street’s slow march into crypto. Citadel Securities, the market-making giant founded by Ken Griffin, invested $200 million into the exchange, pushing its post-money valuation to $20 billion.

That’s a 33% jump from where Kraken stood just two months prior. The exchange was valued at $15 billion in September 2025 after pulling in $600 million from a roster of heavyweight trading firms. The Citadel investment brought Kraken’s total 2025 fundraising haul to $800 million, all raised in under two months.

From trading floor to token exchange

Here’s the thing about Citadel Securities specifically showing up in Kraken’s cap table: it’s the same firm that handles roughly a quarter of all US equity trading volume.

The September round that preceded Citadel’s entry featured its own collection of traditional finance royalty. Jane Street and DRW, both major players in quantitative trading, were among the investors in that $600 million raise at the $15 billion valuation.

The IPO question

Almost immediately after the Citadel investment landed, Kraken made its next move. On November 19, 2025, the exchange confidentially filed a draft S-1 registration statement with the SEC, signaling preparations for an initial public offering potentially targeting Q1 2026.

That timeline didn’t hold. Market conditions in early 2026 prompted Kraken to pump the brakes on its listing plans in March. By May 2026, Co-CEO Arjun Sethi indicated the company was approximately 80% ready for a potential 2026 listing.

One detail worth highlighting: Kraken has no native token. Unlike some competitors that have issued their own digital assets, the $20 billion valuation and the investment from Citadel pertain entirely to equity in the exchange operator.

What this means for investors

Founded in 2011 and operational since 2013, Kraken is one of the longest-running exchanges in the US market. Coinbase, the only major US crypto exchange currently public, has been the default option for institutional investors seeking regulated exchange exposure. Kraken going public would create genuine competition for that capital.
