Lautaro Martinez confirms Barcelona interest, chooses to stay at Inter

Lautaro Martinez put one of the summer’s longest-running transfer sagas to bed on September 2, confirming that Barcelona’s interest was real but that he never seriously considered leaving Inter Milan. The Argentine striker, speaking to Sky Italia, made it clear that staying in Milan was always the plan.

Why Barcelona came knocking

Barcelona’s pursuit of Martinez wasn’t born out of ambition alone. It was born out of necessity. The club needed a striker replacement following Robert Lewandowski’s departure, and their first-choice target, Julián Álvarez at Atlético Madrid, proved impossible to pry loose.

With those negotiations stalling, Barcelona turned their attention to Martinez, whose 22-goal season had only reinforced his status as one of Serie A’s most reliable forwards.

Martinez, though, wasn’t interested. And Inter made it even easier for him by publicly declaring their captain non-transferable throughout the entire summer window.

Barcelona ultimately pivoted to Gabriel Jesus, completing a deal that filled the position but with a distinctly different profile of player.

A loyalty play eight years in the making

Martinez’s decision carries more weight when you trace the full arc of his time in Milan. He arrived from Racing Club in Argentina back in 2018, and has since evolved into the club’s captain, its most important attacking player, and a central figure in a Scudetto-winning squad. His contract runs through June 2029.

In his interview, he emphasized his connection to his teammates and the fans at San Siro, positioning the decision as one driven by loyalty rather than financial calculation or contractual obligation.

That 2020 episode is worth remembering. Barcelona were in a different financial position then, and Martinez was earlier in his development. The deal collapsed because Barca couldn’t structure the finances, not because Martinez refused. This time, the player himself closed the door.

What this means for both clubs

For Inter, keeping Martinez is the single most important piece of business they conducted this summer. Martinez’s 22 goals last season made him the engine of Inter’s attack, and the fact that Inter never wavered in their public stance, insisting he was untouchable, suggests the club understood exactly how irreplaceable he is.

The broader pattern here is also worth watching. Barcelona’s inability to land their top two striker targets, first Álvarez, then Martinez, before settling on a third option, reflects the ongoing challenges the club faces in competing for elite talent.
