Leeds United completes record deal for James Trafford

Leeds United has finalized its club-record signing of goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City in a deal worth £40 million, with the total potentially climbing higher through performance-related add-ons.

The transfer makes Trafford, who turned 23 in October, the most expensive British goalkeeper ever sold. Globally, it ranks as the fifth most expensive goalkeeper transfer in history.

Trafford’s path to Leeds

James Trafford’s career arc reads like a carefully managed portfolio. Born on October 10, 2002, he came through Manchester City’s academy system since 2015.

Rather than sit on the bench behind established starters, Trafford was deployed on loan spells to gain experience. He spent time at Bolton Wanderers before moving to Burnley, where he got consistent first-team minutes in high-pressure environments.

He returned to Manchester City in July 2025, signing a five-year contract. But City’s depth at goalkeeper meant playing time remained limited.

A verbal agreement between Leeds and City reportedly materialized around July 27, 2026. The formal steps to complete the transfer followed in early August. Leeds gets a starting goalkeeper who should anchor their defense for years. City gets a record fee for a player who was unlikely to displace their current number one anytime soon.
