Villa’s midfield math is getting ugly

Amadou Onana is already dealing with a long-term knee injury of his own. Losing two central midfielders to knee problems simultaneously puts real pressure on Emery’s squad depth during the opening stretch of the season.

The remaining options are credible but stretched thin. Boubacar Kamara, Joao Gomes, and Ross Barkley are the most likely candidates to shoulder the minutes in central midfield.

This is not Goretzka’s first encounter with knee trouble. He underwent knee surgery back in 2022, and the years since have been punctuated by a series of muscular issues that interrupted his availability at Bayern Munich across his eight-season, 312-appearance tenure.
