Lido consolidates $16B in staked ETH with Curated Module v2 rollout

Lido just kicked off the most consequential infrastructure change to Ethereum staking since, well, Lido V2. The protocol has begun migrating more than 8 million ETH, roughly $16.5B worth, onto Ethereum’s larger 0x02 validators enabled by the Pectra upgrade. The result: Ethereum’s total validator count drops by approximately 33%.

What CMv2 actually changes

The migration falls under Lido’s Curated Module v2, or CMv2, which the Lido DAO ratified on July 23, 2026, after audits and testnet trials. It represents the most significant structural update since Lido V2 launched in 2023.

Before Pectra, Ethereum validators were capped at 32 ETH each. That meant Lido needed a massive fleet of validators to manage its position as the dominant liquid staking provider. Post-Pectra, validators can hold far more, so all those individual 32 ETH nodes can be folded together.

Attestation messages, the signals validators broadcast each epoch to confirm the state of the chain, are expected to drop by around 29%. The consensus layer gets meaningfully less noisy, though this won’t directly translate into lower gas fees or faster transactions for end users.

The other major shift is financial. For the first time, Lido’s 34 professional node operators will be required to post locked ETH collateral. Previously, the system ran largely on reputation.

The cost of transition

During the migration period, Lido stakers can expect a modest drag on returns, with an estimated 0.28% annual reduction in staking rewards.

Why this matters beyond Lido

Lido controls a dominant share of all staked ETH on Ethereum, which means its infrastructure decisions ripple across the entire network. Reducing Ethereum’s validator count by a third is a network-level event, not just a protocol-level one.

The CMv2 rollout also arrived alongside CSM v3, another component of the broader Core Upgrade package approved by the Lido DAO on July 23, 2026.
