Lionel Mpasi’s World Cup heroics spawn a Solana memecoin, because of course they did

1 hour ago 12

Lionel Mpasi Nzau put on one of the most impressive goalkeeping displays of the 2026 World Cup on June 23, making eight saves against Colombia in a Group K match held in Zapopan, Mexico. DR Congo still lost 0-1, but Mpasi’s performance turned him into an overnight sensation.

And in the time-honored tradition of crypto traders spotting a trending name and immediately turning it into a tradeable asset, a memecoin called $LIONEL appeared on the Solana blockchain.

The performance behind the hype

Mpasi, who is 31 years old, plays his club football for Le Havre in France’s Ligue 1. He signed a two-year deal with the club in July 2025 after coming up through the Paris Saint-Germain youth system.

Despite the loss, the performance drew widespread media coverage. Mpasi was widely regarded as the best player on the pitch, keeping his side competitive until the final whistle against a Colombian squad that entered as heavy favorites.

The $LIONEL token and the memecoin playbook

The $LIONEL token trades on Solana-based platforms including pump.fun, the launchpad that has become ground zero for attention-driven memecoin creation. The token directly references Mpasi and his World Cup moment.

There is no indication that Mpasi himself is involved with the project. No endorsement, no partnership, no affiliation of any kind has been established between the goalkeeper and the token’s creators.

What makes sports-linked memecoins uniquely volatile is that there’s a built-in catalyst calendar. DR Congo will play more group stage matches. If Mpasi puts in another heroic performance, interest could spike again. If DR Congo gets eliminated or Mpasi has a bad game, the narrative dies, and the token likely follows.

Why sports memecoins are a particular kind of gamble

A token like $LIONEL has no utility, no revenue model, and no connection to the athlete it references. Its value is derived entirely from attention.

The lack of any official connection between Mpasi and the $LIONEL token raises the perennial question about consent in memecoin culture. Athletes and public figures regularly find their names and likenesses tokenized without permission. Mpasi almost certainly did not wake up on June 24 expecting to be a crypto asset.

From a market perspective, the key variable is DR Congo’s remaining World Cup schedule. A deep tournament run would keep Mpasi in the headlines and could sustain trading interest in the token. An early exit would likely drain whatever liquidity remains.
