Lumen Technologies transforms into AI networking leader with Anthropic and Yankees partnerships

1 hour ago 16

Lumen Technologies, a company most people associate with old-school telecom, is quietly building the plumbing that AI companies need to function.

The company has landed a partnership with Anthropic valued at approximately $13 billion to expand its fiber network across North America, completed an acquisition of cloud networking platform Alkira, and signed a deal with the New York Yankees.

From phone lines to AI pipelines

The Anthropic partnership, announced in late February 2026, is a contract to build high-capacity fiber network infrastructure across North America, designed to handle low-latency, high-bandwidth connections that AI workloads demand.

“The transformation that we’re driving is really starting to take hold,” President and CFO Chris Stansbury said, pointing to Gartner recently naming Lumen the company “to beat” in enterprise wide area network and connectivity services for AI.

That Gartner recognition, published on June 25, 2026, named Lumen as “the company to beat” in the enterprise WAN and connectivity services sector for AI.

Stansbury framed the competitive landscape in blunt terms. Telecom carriers used to own the full stack, from physical networks to software layers like firewalls and load balancers. Then big tech ate their lunch on the software side. Lumen’s strategy is to take that territory back.

The Alkira acquisition changes the game

The mechanism for that reconquest is Alkira, a cloud networking platform Lumen acquired. The deal was announced on May 5, 2026, and closed on July 7, 2026.

Alkira specializes in multi-cloud environments. Integrating that software capability with Lumen’s existing physical fiber infrastructure creates a combined offering that CEO Kate Johnson and Stansbury have positioned under the banner of becoming a “trusted network for AI.”

Even the Yankees want in

The New York Yankees partnership, announced on July 14, 2026, includes two diverse 100G fiber paths connecting Yankee Stadium to a Tampa data center facility, supporting game operations, fan services, and AI/analytics workloads.

What this means for investors watching the AI infrastructure build-out

Lumen’s stock trading around $7 makes it a very different animal than the mega-cap tech names dominating AI headlines. The $13 billion Anthropic contract alone dwarfs the company’s current market capitalization.

The risk factors are real. Lumen carries significant debt from its legacy telecom operations. But the Gartner recognition, the Anthropic contract size, and the Alkira acquisition suggest this isn’t just a PowerPoint transformation.
