Manchester City are staring down a midfield makeover that could involve two of the most expensive transactions of the summer transfer window. With Barcelona circling Rodri and Chelsea holding firm on a massive price tag for Enzo Fernandez, the reigning Premier League champions find themselves negotiating on two fronts simultaneously.
Chelsea have reportedly set a Friday deadline, sometime in mid-August 2026, for City to meet their £120m valuation for Fernandez. City’s opening bid of £102.5m was waved away. That’s a gap of roughly £17.5m that could still torpedo the whole deal.
The Rodri situation
Barcelona have been persistent in their pursuit of Rodri, the Spanish midfielder who has been central to City’s dominance in recent seasons. The Catalan club’s latest offer sits at approximately €60m, or about £51m, after an initial bid in the range of €45-50m was rejected.
City are understood to value Rodri somewhere between €60m and €70m, possibly more. So the two sides are inching closer, but haven’t quite met in the middle.
Rodri reportedly prefers a move to Barcelona over Real Madrid, and personal terms between the player and Barcelona are said to already be agreed. With just one year remaining on his City contract, the leverage equation tilts further away from the English club with every passing week.
Losing Rodri would be a genuine blow. The defensive midfielder was instrumental in City’s Premier League title and Champions League triumph. Rodri was also honored with the 2024 Ballon d’Or, further solidifying his status as one of the elite midfielders in global football.
Why Fernandez costs more than Rodri
Fernandez is younger, which in transfer market logic adds a premium. Rodri, meanwhile, is entering the final 12 months of his deal, a situation that historically deflates a player’s transfer value. A club can either sell at a discount now or lose the player for free next summer.
Chelsea’s £120m valuation, roughly $161m, reflects the fact that Fernandez is under a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have no pressure to sell, which means they can name their price and wait. The price tag would make Fernandez one of the most expensive midfielders in football history. Chelsea themselves paid a club-record fee to sign him from Benfica in January 2023.
Maresca’s reunion bid
Enzo Maresca, who took over as Manchester City manager, previously coached Fernandez during his time at Chelsea. That existing relationship is reportedly a driving force behind City’s interest in the Argentine international.
What to watch this week
The Friday deadline is the immediate flashpoint. If City don’t meet Chelsea’s £120m asking price, the deal could collapse, leaving Maresca scrambling for alternatives while potentially still losing Rodri to Barcelona.
The net spend math is worth noting too. If City sell Rodri for somewhere around €60-70m and buy Fernandez for £120m, they’re looking at a net outlay north of £50m just to reshape one position.
Both deals remain fluid, and the domino effect is clear: one move likely triggers the other. If Rodri stays, the Fernandez pursuit probably cools. If Barcelona finally meet City’s asking price, expect that £102.5m bid for Fernandez to climb toward Chelsea’s target in a hurry.
