Manchester City just dropped £12.5 million on a 17-year-old who can’t legally buy a beer in most countries. Jeremy Monga, a winger from Leicester City, has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League giants in a deal that underscores just how aggressively football clubs are deploying capital on unproven talent.
The fee breaks down to a £10 million base price with up to £2.5 million in potential add-ons, plus a sell-on clause that gives Leicester a cut of any future transfer. Arsenal reportedly sniffed around but walked away when the price tag got too rich. City, as usual, did not flinch.
The deal’s details
The transfer was finalized in early July 2026, just days after Monga celebrated his 17th birthday. The timing matters because FIFA regulations restrict international transfers of players under 18, meaning City likely had to wait for that birthday before completing paperwork.
Monga is an England youth international, which adds a premium to his valuation. English clubs have shown a consistent willingness to pay above-market rates for homegrown talent, partly because Premier League squad registration rules require a minimum number of club-trained players.
Newly appointed Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca played a pivotal role in the deal. Maresca previously coached at Leicester City, where he would have had a front-row seat to Monga’s development. That existing relationship reportedly gave City an edge over Arsenal, who ultimately decided the valuation was too steep.
