Manchester United scrambles to retain JJ Gabriel amid exit desire

Manchester United’s most exciting academy prospect in years wants out. JJ Gabriel, a 15-year-old left winger who has been rewriting the club’s youth record books, submitted a request to cancel his registration around September 15, sending shockwaves through Old Trafford’s hierarchy.

The timing could not be more dramatic. Just days before his registration request, Gabriel had scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut. The club had reportedly been preparing to include him in a Carabao Cup match against Brighton, a move that would have made him the youngest player ever to appear in United’s senior squad.

A prodigy in a hurry

Gabriel, formally known as Joseph Junior Andreou O’Cearuill, became Manchester United’s youngest ever U18 debutant at just 14 years old in April 2025, scoring twice on that occasion.

He earned the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season award despite being only 14 for the majority of the 2025-26 campaign, competing against players up to four years his senior.

The performances have drawn comparisons to Phil Foden. Real Madrid are reportedly leading the pursuit, with Barcelona, PSG, and Bayern Munich also monitoring the situation.

United’s full-court press

Manchester United is not taking this lightly. CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox are personally involved in discussions with Gabriel’s family.

This is not the first time Gabriel has flirted with the exit door. He nearly left the club in the summer of 2025 before opting to stay following meetings with management.

Gabriel’s current registration with United runs through the end of the 2026-27 season. However, his family background could potentially facilitate an earlier move abroad, creating a pathway that bypasses the typical restrictions on international transfers of minors under FIFA regulations.

His 16th birthday falls on October 6, 2026. Turning 16 activates his eligibility for a scholarship contract in England, but it also opens doors for certain cross-border moves depending on passport and residency considerations.
