Manchester United tells Andre Onana he can seek new club ahead of pre-season return

1 hour ago 7

Manchester United has told goalkeeper Andre Onana that he is free to find a new club, a decisive signal that the £43.8 million investment from 2023 has run its course. The Cameroonian shot-stopper, currently on loan at Trabzonspor, is still expected to report for pre-season training in July, creating the kind of awkward professional limbo that makes workplace small talk even more painful than usual.

Onana joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 with the mandate to stabilize a defense that had been leaking goals like a sieve in a rainstorm. He has since racked up over 100 appearances for the club.

From San Siro to the exit door

Onana arrived at Old Trafford with a Champions League finalist pedigree, having helped Inter reach the final in 2023 before United swooped in with an initial fee of £43.8 million.

Onana was loaned to Turkish club Trabzonspor on September 11, 2025. No buy option or loan fee was reported in connection with the arrangement.

Trabzonspor reportedly has interest in extending Onana’s stay beyond the current loan period. But with no buy clause baked into the original deal, any permanent move would require fresh negotiations between the clubs.

What went wrong at Old Trafford

Over 100 appearances should theoretically build a foundation of trust. In Onana’s case, it seems to have built a body of evidence that convinced the club’s decision-makers to look elsewhere.

A player signed for £43.8 million who is loaned out without a fee and then told to find a new home represents a significant depreciation in value. Whatever United receives in a transfer fee, assuming they receive one at all, will almost certainly represent a loss on the initial investment.

What this means for the market

Manchester United operates a fan token, MUFC, through the Chiliz and Socios.com platform. The Onana situation has not triggered any notable movement in the token’s price or trading volume. No connections to digital assets or cryptocurrency have emerged from this situation, despite Manchester United’s operation of the MUFC fan token through the Chiliz/Socios.com platform that offers members certain governance rights and rewards.
