Marcus Rashford returns to Manchester United as €30M buy option expires

Marcus Rashford is heading back to Manchester United. FC Barcelona has chosen not to activate the €30 million purchase option embedded in the loan deal that sent the English forward to La Liga, meaning Rashford will return to Old Trafford with his long-term future still very much an open question.

The buy option was set to expire on June 15, with Rashford’s loan itself concluding on June 30. Barcelona had roughly a year to decide whether the 28-year-old was worth the permanent investment. The answer, apparently, was no.

Manchester United, for their part, have reportedly been firm on the asking price. The club has ruled out any possibility of a discounted deal or an extension of the loan arrangement. It’s the full €30 million or nothing.

The initial loan agreement was finalized in July 2025, sending Rashford to Camp Nou after a period of uncertainty at United. By most accounts, his time in Spain was productive. A change of scenery, a different tactical system, and the chance to operate without the weight of being Manchester United’s hometown hero all appeared to do Rashford some good.

Rashford is expected to report back to Manchester United ahead of pre-season. The club has not made a definitive decision on his future. The door to reintegration into the first-team squad has been left open, but there’s a meaningful difference between “not closing the door” and “rolling out the welcome mat.”
