- Crypto VC deals fell 46% from Q1 to Q4 2024, reflecting increased investor selectivity.
- Total crypto VC funding remained stable at $10 billion despite market uncertainties.
- Valuations surged, with early-stage valuations more than doubling amid demand for infrastructure and decentralized AI.
The cryptocurrency venture capital market experienced a significant downturn in 2024, with total deal counts dropping from 653 in Q1 to just 351 in Q4—a sharp 46% decline. According to PitchBook’s Crypto VC Trends report, this marked a continuation of the pullback seen in previous quarters, reinforcing the trend of investors becoming more selective.
Despite fewer deals, Q4 showed a modest funding rebound, rising 13.6% from Q3 to $2.5 billion. However, the overall trend suggests a growing preference for quality over quantity, as capital increasingly flowed into fewer but stronger projects.
Crypto Market Resilience Despite Regulatory Pressures
Despite macroeconomic challenges and regulatory uncertainty, particularly in the U.S., crypto VC funding remained largely stable. For the full year, total funding reached $10 billion across 1,940 deals, nearly matching 2023’s $10.3 billion spread across 1,936 deals.

This resilience suggests that the sector is adapting to shifting market conditions, with investors prioritizing projects that demonstrate strong fundamentals and long-term viability.
The focus has largely shifted toward infrastructure and decentralized AI, reflecting growing confidence in technologies that enhance blockchain scalability, interoperability, and security.
Rising Valuations Highlight Investor Interest
While deal count declined, valuations surged across all funding stages, signaling continued investor confidence in early-stage projects. Seed-stage valuations jumped 70.2% year-over-year to $20 million, while early-stage valuations more than doubled, rising 109% to $52.3 million.
Even late-stage rounds, though more modest, saw a 3.8% increase to $45.3 million. Median deal sizes reflected this trend, with early-stage funding growing by 26.9%, highlighting strong demand for innovative startups despite the overall cautious investment environment.

This shift suggests that investors are willing to pay a premium for projects with clear technological differentiation and strong market potential, particularly in infrastructure and decentralized AI.
2025 Outlook
Looking ahead, 2025 will bring further consolidation among exchanges, custody solutions, and infrastructure providers. With venture capital becoming more selective, funding will likely continue flowing toward next-generation blockchain protocols, AI-driven projects, and stablecoin innovations. While the market no longer reflects the frenzied investment activity of previous years, its steady funding levels, rising valuations, and strategic focus indicate a maturing industry poised for long-term growth.
