Manchester United appears to have won the charm offensive for one of the Premier League’s most coveted young midfielders. Mateus Fernandes, the 21-year-old Portuguese talent currently at West Ham United, has made his preference clear: he wants to move to Old Trafford this summer.
What makes that preference striking is the company he’s turning down. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham Hotspur have all shown interest. Fernandes, apparently, would rather rebuild with United than take the glamour route to the Bernabeu or the Parc des Princes.
The price tag problem
West Ham are reportedly valuing Fernandes between £80 million and £85 million. That’s more than double the £38 million they paid Southampton for him in August 2025.
Manchester United have already tested the waters with an opening bid. It was rejected. The gap between what United are willing to pay and what West Ham are demanding remains significant enough that this transfer is far from a formality.
Fernandes signed a contract that runs until June 2030, meaning the Hammers are under zero pressure to sell. They can afford to sit at their asking price and wait for someone to meet it, whether that’s United or one of the other clubs circling.
Tottenham have reportedly moved aggressively as well, with some reports suggesting they are close to finalizing personal terms with Fernandes. That adds another dimension of urgency for United, who risk losing out on their preferred target if they take too long haggling over the fee.
Why United want Fernandes
Fernandes, born on July 10, 2004, is a central midfielder who has demonstrated genuine versatility across multiple midfield roles during his time in the Premier League. That adaptability is precisely the kind of profile United need as they attempt to construct a squad capable of competing at the top end of English football again.
His trajectory tells its own story. Moving from Southampton to West Ham for £38 million was already a significant transfer. Seeing his valuation more than double within roughly a year speaks to the kind of impact he’s had.
