Mbappé’s World Cup scoring run sparks predictable wave of Solana meme tokens

1 hour ago 11

Kylian Mbappé’s latest World Cup goals have pushed him into rarefied company on the tournament’s all-time scoring list, now sitting at 14 goals across 15 matches.

And right on cue, the crypto world has responded the way it always does when a famous name trends globally. A parade of unauthorized meme tokens bearing his name popped up on Solana’s decentralized exchanges, driven by pure speculation and exactly zero official involvement from the player himself.

The scoring record in context

Mbappé netted his 14th World Cup goal on June 16, 2026, in a match against Senegal. That tally puts him tied for third on the all-time World Cup scoring list, trailing only Miroslav Klose at 16 goals and Brazil’s Ronaldo at 15.

For perspective, Klose needed 24 matches across four World Cups to reach his record. Ronaldo took 19 games across three tournaments. Mbappé has played just 15 World Cup matches.

The meme token circus

Multiple Solana-based tokens branded as MBAPPE or MBAPEPE have seen trading spikes following his recent goals. None of them carry any official endorsement from Mbappé, his management, or any organization he’s associated with. They’re typically valued in the low thousands of dollars, with minimal trading volume.

Mbappé has actually been burned by this phenomenon before. In August 2024, his X account was hacked to promote a fraudulent Solana token. That scam token briefly reached a market cap of $460 million before the inevitable implosion.

Mbappé’s actual crypto history

The French forward does have one legitimate connection to the crypto space. In 2022, he partnered with Sorare, the Ethereum-based NFT fantasy sports platform. That partnership had a measurable impact: NFT sales on Sorare surged by 795% within 24 hours of the announcement.

That’s the only confirmed crypto-related activity involving Mbappé. Everything else — every MBAPPE token, every MBAPEPE derivative — is community-created speculation with no foundational support.

What this means for investors

The $460 million market cap that Mbappé’s hacked-account scam token briefly achieved should serve as a permanent warning. Tokens with market caps in the low thousands can move 90% in either direction within minutes. There’s no fundamental analysis to perform because there are no fundamentals.
