Meta Platforms shares break out, signaling renewed market momentum

Meta Platforms just posted its best month in over a decade, and the catalyst wasn’t a metaverse pivot or another Instagram feature. It was an AI agent called Muse.

Shares of Meta climbed roughly 36% through September 24, 2026, marking the stock’s strongest monthly performance since July 2013. The stock hit $777.59, pushing Meta’s market capitalization to approximately $1.98 trillion.

Muse changes the math

The inflection point arrived on September 8, when Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent that quickly became the number one app on the Apple App Store.

On September 21 alone, Meta shares surged 11.34% in a single session.

Analysts are projecting that Muse could eventually generate up to $50 billion in annual revenue, with costs that remain manageable relative to that upside. The monetization playbook reportedly includes a freemium model alongside enhanced advertising capabilities. Wall Street responded accordingly, with multiple analysts raising their price targets for Meta into a range between $860 and $995.

From doubt to breakout

Through mid-August 2026, Meta shares were down approximately 18% year-to-date, with investors uneasy about the company’s massive capital expenditure on AI infrastructure. A legal settlement also helped clear the air during this period, removing an overhang that had weighed on sentiment.

What Muse means for the AI landscape

Meta’s success with Muse validates a thesis that consumer AI applications can achieve immediate, massive adoption when built on top of an existing user base. Meta already had the audience and built the AI tool to serve them, resulting in an app store chart-topper within days of launch.

The projected $50 billion revenue ceiling analysts have floated for Muse, if it materializes even partially, would represent a meaningful new business line for Meta. For context, Meta’s trailing advertising revenue stood at approximately $228 billion.

Upcoming earnings reports will be the next major test, with investors expecting early monetization metrics for Muse, retention data beyond the initial download spike, and guidance on expanding the agent’s capabilities. Meta’s annual Connect developer event is also being closely watched for further strategic developments heading into the fourth quarter of 2026.
