Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed company that has become Japan’s answer to MicroStrategy, sent approximately 4,800 BTC to Coinbase Prime over the final days of August 2026. The transfers, worth roughly $377 million at current prices, triggered the kind of on-chain alarm bells that make crypto Twitter reach for the panic button.
Turns out, the company was just rearranging its furniture. CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed the moves were custodial adjustments, not a prelude to selling.
Breaking down the transfers
The activity unfolded across three separate transactions over five days. On August 25, Metaplanet moved 1,000 BTC to Coinbase Prime, a transfer valued at approximately $80 million. Three days later, on August 28, a second batch of 1,350 BTC followed, worth around $108 million.
Then came the big one. On August 29, a single transfer of 3,000 BTC hit Coinbase Prime, clocking in at roughly $237 million. On-chain analytics firms quickly identified the wallet addresses and linked them to Metaplanet’s known treasury infrastructure.
Combined, the 4,800 BTC represents somewhere between 7% and 10% of Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings of 43,000 BTC.
Why move billions in Bitcoin without selling?
Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin position sits at 43,000 BTC, acquired at an average cost basis of approximately $96,191 per coin. That puts the company’s total investment at close to $4.09 billion. With Bitcoin trading near the $79,000 to $80,000 range during these transfers, Metaplanet is sitting on an unrealized loss relative to its average purchase price, which makes selling even less strategically appealing.
Gerovich’s public reassurance that no sales were planned appears consistent with the on-chain evidence. No confirmed dispositions followed any of the three transfers.
Metaplanet’s growing Bitcoin empire
Metaplanet’s evolution from a relatively obscure Japanese hotel company into one of the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holders has been one of the more compelling transformation stories in crypto. The company adopted a Bitcoin treasury strategy that mirrors the playbook pioneered by Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy, accumulating aggressively through a combination of equity raises, convertible notes, and operating cash flow.
At 43,000 BTC, Metaplanet ranks among the top publicly traded Bitcoin holders globally. The company has also been building out its US presence through a subsidiary called Superplanet, signaling ambitions that extend beyond simply stacking sats on a balance sheet.
