Microsoft discovers StilachiRAT: the malware targeting crypto

Microsoft has shared the discovery of a new malware, StilachiRAT, which seems to be targeting the crypto sector.

Specifically, Microsoft’s Incident Response Team has stated that it is a new remote access trojan (RAT), which can steal information, such as credentials stored in the Google Chrome browser.

In practice, through this malware, the malicious actors can steal the information from the digital wallet and the data stored in the clipboard, managing to access the cryptocurrencies contained in 20 cryptocurrency wallet extensions.

Among the various crypto-wallet extensions on Chrome, there are also Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet, MetaMask and OKX Wallet.

Not only that, the malware is also capable of extracting credentials saved in the local state file of Google Chrome and monitoring clipboard activity, searching for sensitive information such as passwords and cryptographic keys.

Microsoft and the new malware: the crypto scam

The new malware, discovered last November 2024 by Microsoft, could be added to the list of crypto scam techniques.

In this regard, Microsoft has suggested that users have antivirus software, anti-phishing components, and cloud-based anti-malware on their devices.

In any case, crypto scams continue to refine themselves. Chainalysis had stated in its 2024 report that, last year, the pig butchering technique had increased by 40% year-on-year, but it also emerged the use of generative AI to steal cryptocurrencies.

Specifically, Chainalysis stated that in 2024, scammers would have stolen at least 9.9 billion dollars in on-chain cryptocurrencies.

Regarding generative AI, it seems that Artificial Intelligence software is being used to create fake characters for scammers.

Majorana 1: the quantum chip to revolutionize the work sectors

Recently, Microsoft has made headlines for another discovery: Majorana 1. It is an innovative quantum chip set to change the game for various work sectors.

In practice, Majorana 1 aims to accelerate the development of practical quantum computers and bring ultra-fast computing into the AI system.

Specifically, the hardware takes advantage of an architecture based on “topological superconductors.” Its technological revolution involves particles that simultaneously act as matter and antimatter.

If the development of Majorana 1 follows the path anticipated by Microsoft, then quantum chips could truly transform entire sectors radically. For example, in the financial sector, it could be used for portfolio optimization and the simulation of complex markets, enhancing forecasts and risk management.
