Mohamed Salah joins Trabzonspor, triggering tourism boom and 27% fan token spike

Mohamed Salah, one of the most recognizable footballers on the planet, has signed a two-year contract with Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor. The deal, announced on August 6, runs through June 2028 and reportedly pays the Egyptian international roughly €17 million per season, including performance bonuses and merchandise revenue shares.

A city braces for a new kind of visitor

Trabzon, a port city on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, has long been a regional tourism draw. But local officials are now preparing for something different: a sustained wave of Egyptian and Arab football fans following their hero to a new home.

When Salah touched down at Trabzon Airport, thousands of fans were already waiting. The scenes resembled a head-of-state arrival more than a football transfer, underscoring the sheer gravitational pull Salah exerts across the Middle East and North Africa.

Salah will wear the iconic number 10 shirt at Trabzonspor. The formal announcement coincided with a fan celebration at the stadium, turning what could have been a press-conference formality into something closer to a civic event.

Fan token traders got there first

Before the tourism boards could update their brochures, the Trabzonspor Fan Token (TRA) had already moved. Reports indicate the token experienced a 27% intraday price spike following the signing announcement, accompanied by a notable jump in trading volume.

Fan tokens are digital assets issued by sports clubs on platforms like Socios. They typically give holders voting rights on minor club decisions and serve as a kind of loyalty currency.
