Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 drops with 2.8 trillion parameters, and Wall Street is already nervous

A Beijing-based AI startup just released the largest open-weight model the world has seen, and the ripple effects are already hitting tech stocks, chip makers, and the broader conversation around who actually controls the future of artificial intelligence.

Moonshot AI launched its Kimi K3 model on July 16, packing 2.8 trillion parameters into a natively multimodal architecture that handles text, images, and video. The model’s one-million-token context window puts it in rarefied company. Its API pricing, at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, is roughly half what comparable US models charge.

What Kimi K3 actually does

Kimi K3 is built on a hybrid architecture combining what Moonshot calls “Kimi Delta Attention” with a sparse Mixture-of-Experts setup. The model doesn’t fire all 2.8 trillion parameters for every query. It routes tasks to specialized sub-networks, which keeps compute costs manageable while maintaining performance across diverse workloads.

The model excels at long-horizon coding tasks, agentic workflows, and visual reasoning. Moonshot AI plans to release the full open weights on July 27, meaning developers worldwide will be able to fine-tune the model for their own applications.

Markets react with predictable anxiety

The Nasdaq dipped roughly 1% following the announcement, with AI chip stocks taking a particular hit. Nvidia felt noticeable pressure.

When DeepSeek’s models made waves in early 2025, US tech stocks wobbled on similar fears that Chinese AI labs were closing the gap faster than expected. Kimi K3 is the latest data point in that ongoing narrative.

At $3 per million input tokens, Kimi K3 undercuts premium US models like OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic’s Claude/Fable series by approximately 50%. For enterprise customers running millions of API calls per day, that cost differential isn’t a rounding error.

The crypto angle: decentralized compute enters the chat

There are no crypto tokens directly tied to the Kimi K3 launch.

Open-weight models like Kimi K3 are designed to be downloaded, modified, and run independently. That’s exactly the use case that decentralized GPU networks have been positioning themselves for.

The DeepSeek moment in early 2025 triggered significant moves in tokens associated with decentralized compute and AI inference. Whether Kimi K3 produces a similar effect depends on how aggressively the open-weight release on July 27 drives actual adoption across decentralized platforms.
