For a player who arrived at Napoli for a fee exceeding €25 million from PSV Eindhoven just over a year ago, the trajectory has been almost perfectly downward. Being excluded from a marquee European fixture isn’t just a bad look. It’s the kind of moment that tends to define how a player’s tenure at a club is remembered.

A transfer that never found its footing

Lang signed with Napoli on July 17, 2025, with bonuses potentially pushing the fee even higher. The expectation was that the left winger, who had been electric at PSV, would slot into Antonio Conte’s system and add creative firepower to an already dangerous attack.

During the first half of the 2025-26 Serie A season, Lang managed just one goal across 18 appearances. His struggles were widely attributed to difficulty adapting to Conte’s tactical demands, a system that requires full-backs and wingers to operate with defensive discipline that doesn’t exactly play to Lang’s strengths as a flair-first attacker.

The situation deteriorated to the point where Napoli shipped Lang out on loan to Galatasaray in January 2026. Dropping a player from a Champions League squad sends a very specific signal to the rest of the dressing room: nobody is above the rules, especially not someone who hasn’t earned regular minutes.

What comes next for Lang

The practical question now is whether Lang has any viable path back into Conte’s plans. A player who cost north of €25 million, produced one goal in half a season, was loaned out, came back, and then got dropped for disciplinary issues isn’t exactly going to command a premium on the market. Napoli may need to accept a significant loss just to clear the wages and squad spot.

For Lang personally, he’s 27 and at a crossroads. He was once considered one of the most exciting young attackers in Dutch football, but the gap between talent and output has widened with each passing season.
