Napoli seals personal terms with Mario Gila, advances talks with Lazio

Napoli has locked down the player side of the Mario Gila equation. Now comes the hard part: convincing Lazio to let him go without a prolonged standoff.

The 25-year-old Spanish centre-back has agreed personal terms with Napoli on a deal reportedly worth approximately €3 million per season, running through 2031. The catch is that the two clubs still need to agree on a transfer fee.

The gap between buyer and seller

Lazio’s asking price sits somewhere in the €20-30 million range. That’s a substantial markup on the €6 million they paid Real Madrid for Gila back in July 2022, but not an unreasonable one for a defender with a contract running until June 2027.

Gila has reportedly requested that the club facilitate his departure this summer. A player with two years left on his contract who publicly wants to leave is a depreciating asset. Lazio risks losing him for significantly less next summer, or closer to nothing in 2027.

There’s also a sell-on clause in play. Real Madrid reportedly retained a percentage of any future transfer fee when they sold Gila to Lazio. That means whatever Lazio receives, a slice goes back to Madrid, making Lazio even more reluctant to accept a low-ball offer since the net return shrinks further after Madrid takes its cut.

Why Gila fits Napoli’s rebuild

Napoli’s pursuit of Gila makes sense through the lens of what the club is building under newly appointed coach Massimiliano Allegri. Napoli isn’t the only club that noticed. AC Milan has also been linked with Gila, though Napoli appears to have moved faster and more decisively.

The broader context

Gila arrived at Lazio from Real Madrid’s academy system in July 2022. Napoli’s willingness to offer a six-year contract through 2031 signals they view Gila as a long-term cornerstone. The sell-on clause to Real Madrid means Lazio’s net return from any sale is reduced by whatever percentage Madrid retained.

What to watch as negotiations continue

The final transfer fee will likely land somewhere below Lazio’s initial asking range. The question is whether that number ends up closer to €15 million or €25 million, and how the sell-on clause to Real Madrid factors into Lazio’s willingness to compromise. As of mid-June 2026, no final agreement on a transfer fee has been reached.
