Newcastle intensifies pursuit of keeping Nick Woltemade as Napoli circles with loan inquiry

Newcastle United spent roughly £65M to £69M on Nick Woltemade last summer. One year and a handful of goals later, Napoli came knocking to see if they could borrow him.

The Serie A side made contact with Newcastle around August 26-27, inquiring about a potential loan deal for the German striker before the summer transfer window slams shut at the end of August. Newcastle’s response was swift and unambiguous: no.

A club-record signing under pressure

Woltemade arrived at St James’ Park on August 30, 2025, from VfB Stuttgart in a deal worth approximately €75M. It was the biggest transfer fee in Newcastle’s history.

His first Premier League season did not exactly justify the price tag. Across 51 appearances in 2025-26, Woltemade managed somewhere between 8 and 11 goals, a return that would be perfectly respectable for a mid-table squad player but looks thin for a record signing at a club with Champions League ambitions.

Manager Matthias Jaissle has publicly backed his forward. The coach expressed confidence in Woltemade’s ability to push through the difficult adjustment period and cement a regular starting spot as the new season gets underway.

Why Napoli came calling

Napoli’s interest is less about Woltemade specifically and more about the hole Romelu Lukaku left behind. The Belgian striker departed for Fenerbahce, leaving the club scrambling to find attacking reinforcements before the window closes.

But Newcastle shut down the conversation before it could develop into anything resembling a negotiation. Club sources denied any formal approach had been made.

Woltemade’s contract runs until June 2031, giving the club plenty of runway to develop their investment. His estimated market value currently sits around €55M, already a significant drop from his purchase price.
