Nvidia added somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 billion to its market capitalization in a single trading session on August 27, making it the largest one-day gain in market value any company has ever recorded. Shares climbed as much as 9% intraday, the chipmaker’s strongest performance since April 2025.
The catalyst was almost comically straightforward: Nvidia printed a quarter so far above expectations that even the most bullish analysts had to recalibrate. Fiscal Q2 2026 revenue landed at $96.2 billion, a 106% jump from the same period a year ago and roughly $4 billion above consensus estimates of $92.2 billion.
The numbers behind the surge
Nvidia’s data-center division generated $89 billion in revenue during the quarter, representing a 117% year-over-year increase.
Adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.22. Nvidia issued a long-term revenue growth forecast of approximately 70% for fiscal 2028. Wall Street had been modeling something closer to 44-45%.
After the rally, Nvidia’s market capitalization settled in a range between $5.1 trillion and $5.5 trillion, firmly reinforcing its position as the most valuable publicly traded company on the planet.
A rebound from a surprisingly tepid year
As of mid-year, shares were up only about 12% year-to-date. Several headwinds had kept the stock in check. Investors worried that major cloud customers might start pulling back on AI infrastructure spending after years of aggressive buildouts. OpenAI’s well-publicized push to develop custom in-house chips raised questions about whether Nvidia’s dominance in AI training hardware was as durable as bulls believed.
Ripple effects across the chip sector
Nvidia’s earnings didn’t just move Nvidia. The broader semiconductor complex caught a tailwind, with AI-linked chip stocks rallying in sympathy.
The market-cap addition of roughly $295-325 billion in a single session also puts Nvidia’s move in rare historical company. Apple briefly held the record for largest single-day market cap gain, and Nvidia has now reclaimed that distinction.
