Ontology’s core development team pulled the emergency brake on its mainnet on August 31, stopping block production entirely after flagging a potential security issue during a routine daily check. The last block produced was approximately 20,770,893, and every on-chain transaction ground to a halt while validators and the technical team launched a comprehensive review.
No confirmed security breach or user asset loss has been reported. But the precautionary freeze was enough to send ripples across the ecosystem, with major Korean exchanges Bithumb and Upbit quickly suspending deposits and withdrawals for ONT, ONG, and MovieBloc (MBL) tokens tied to the Ontology network.
What happened and what we know so far
The halt came roughly ten days after Ontology rolled out its MainNet v3.1.2 upgrade around August 21. That update was designed to improve Ethereum compatibility by adding EVM opcodes, a move aimed at making the network more accessible to developers building in the broader EVM ecosystem.
The Ontology team has not provided a timeline for when block production will resume. The priority, according to the team, is completing a thorough safety assessment before bringing the network back online.
Trading on alternative networks has not been affected. If you hold ONT or ONG on a centralized exchange that hasn’t paused activity, your tokens are still tradeable. But any assets sitting in on-chain wallets or pending on-chain transactions are frozen until the mainnet restarts.
Exchange responses and market impact
Bithumb and Upbit moved fast. Both South Korean exchanges suspended ONT, ONG, and MBL transactions on the same day the halt was announced.
The broader pattern of precautionary chain halts
The distinction here is that Ontology’s team initiated the halt themselves rather than having the network fail organically. The timing also matters. The v3.1.2 upgrade was supposed to make Ontology more competitive by enhancing EVM compatibility. An emergency shutdown ten days later is not exactly the confidence-building follow-up the team was hoping for.
Ontology is a public blockchain designed to address the needs of decentralized identity, data management, and trust infrastructure, employing a dual-token model where ONT serves governance and staking roles, while ONG functions as a utility token for transaction fees. Since its active mainnet launch in 2018, Ontology has incorporated several enhancements, particularly aimed at improving its compatibility with Ethereum through the introduction of EVM opcodes in recent upgrades.
