The US military is preparing to test space-based missile defense technology before the end of 2025, with plans for a full demonstration by 2027. The effort falls under the Pentagon’s Golden Dome initiative, a sprawling program that could ultimately cost $185 billion and represents the most ambitious expansion of American missile defense architecture in decades.
If the phrase “space-based missile defense” sounds like it was pulled from a Reagan-era fever dream, that’s because it basically was. The concept dates back to the Strategic Defense Initiative of the 1980s, colloquially known as Star Wars, which envisioned orbital weapons capable of shooting down incoming nuclear missiles.
What Golden Dome actually looks like
At its core, the program is designed to counter a new generation of threats that traditional ground-based missile defense systems struggle to handle. Hypersonic missiles, maneuverable warheads, and increasingly sophisticated ballistic weapons from adversaries like China and Russia have exposed gaps in existing defenses. Interceptors positioned in orbit could theoretically engage these threats earlier in their flight path, before they have a chance to maneuver toward their targets.
The US Space Force’s Space Systems Command has been busy laying the groundwork. The command is set to award 20 Other Transaction Authority agreements, worth up to $3.2 billion combined, to 12 companies for space-based interceptor prototype development. Those contracts are expected to land in late 2025 or early 2026.
Northrop Grumman and Raytheon are among the firms tapped to advance interceptor prototypes, with the goal of integrating operational systems by 2028. Northrop Grumman has indicated it expects to demonstrate on-orbit space-based interceptor capabilities in 2027, following ground tests scheduled for the same year.
Then there’s Apex, a less household name that’s carving out a notable role. The company’s Project Shadow aims to launch what it calls an “Orbital Magazine,” essentially a satellite bus designed to deploy and fire interceptors from orbit. That launch is targeting no earlier than June 2026, with the goal of firing two interceptors from a commercial satellite as a proof of concept.
The price tag
The fiscal year 2027 budget request for Golden Dome exceeds $17.5 billion. The projected overall cost of the program is estimated to reach $185 billion or more.
Commercial meets national security
One of the more interesting dynamics playing out within Golden Dome is the increasing entanglement of commercial aerospace companies with national security missions. Apex’s involvement is illustrative. Project Shadow is described as a self-funded commercial effort, with the company positioning itself to demonstrate interceptor technology on its own dime before government integration timelines kick in.
For defense contractors already in the mix, the financial implications are substantial. Up to $3.2 billion in near-term contract awards creates immediate revenue opportunities, while the program’s long-term trajectory toward a $185 billion spend suggests sustained demand for years to come. Companies like Northrop Grumman, which are positioned across multiple phases of the program from ground testing to on-orbit demonstration, stand to benefit from what amounts to a generational investment in a new defense layer.
