Pierre-Emile Højbjerg turns down Newcastle United’s transfer proposal

That is a significant markdown from the £30 million Newcastle once offered Tottenham Hotspur for the same player, a bid that never came to fruition.

Højbjerg ultimately decided to stay put. His agent confirmed he remains committed to Marseille, describing him as a “proud Marseille player” with no intention of leaving. The door is reportedly not bolted shut for future possibilities, but for this window, the conversation is over.

Newcastle needed the deal to work. The club lost Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali from their midfield this summer, two players who were central to their system and their identity.

Højbjerg’s journey to this moment

Højbjerg joined Marseille on loan from Tottenham during the 2024-25 season before making the switch permanent in 2025. He made a total of 145 appearances for Spurs before the loan move.

He is now the captain of Olympique de Marseille and doubles as captain of the Denmark national team. Last season, Højbjerg scored 5 goals in 43 appearances for Marseille across all competitions.

For Newcastle, the rejection compounds the midfield gaps left by Guimarães and Tonali.
