Rafael Leao rejects Aston Villa move, joins Galatasaray instead

When money talks, it occasionally speaks Turkish. Rafael Leao, one of the most electric wingers in European football over the past half-decade, has turned down a move to Aston Villa and instead signed with Galatasaray in a deal worth €45 million plus €2 million in performance-related add-ons.

The 27-year-old Portuguese international’s decision came down to the simplest variable in football: the paycheck. Galatasaray reportedly offered Leao between €10 million and €12 million net per season, while Villa’s proposal sat around €7 million to €7.5 million net. That’s a gap of roughly €4.5 million per year at the top end, which over a multi-year contract adds up to the kind of figure that makes even talented attackers reconsider their Premier League dreams.

Why Villa couldn’t close the deal

Aston Villa explored multiple deal structures to land Leao, including a loan with an obligation to buy and a straight permanent transfer valued at around €46 million to €50 million. The transfer fee itself was never the sticking point. Villa’s constraint was on the wage side, where the club was actively trying to reduce their salary bill rather than inflate it with a marquee earner.

Leao leaves AC Milan after a substantial run in Serie A. Across 291 appearances for the Rossoneri, he registered 80 goals and 61 assists.

What Galatasaray are building

Galatasaray’s recruitment strategy in recent years has shifted from signing aging stars looking for a final payday to pursuing players in or near their prime who can contribute in both the Turkish Super Lig and European competition. The club had already secured Victor Osimhen in a record deal prior to landing Leao.
