Real Betis goalkeeper shakeup hints at a deeper trend: tokenized fan engagement meets La Liga transfer drama

Real Betis are closing in on a deal to bring goalkeeper Diego Conde from Villarreal, a move designed to fill the gap left by Pau López’s surprising departure. The 27-year-old Spanish keeper, valued at around €3M, could arrive on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

The deal and the departure

Pau López only rejoined Real Betis on July 22, 2025, signing a three-year contract that was supposed to run through 2028. Reports indicate López is leaving for personal and family reasons, with a verbal agreement to join FC Andorra already in place.

That left manager Manuel Pellegrini with a problem. His solution: Diego Conde, who has been seeking more playing time after limited opportunities behind Villarreal’s established first-choice options. Villarreal strengthened their goalkeeping roster by acquiring Arnau Tenas in 2025, which further diminished playing opportunities for Conde.

The reported structure, a loan with an option to buy, gives Betis financial flexibility. For Conde, it’s a chance to finally be a regular starter in La Liga rather than watching from the bench. Transfer reporters Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto have both been tracking the negotiations.
