Real Madrid’s summer 2026 rebuild is moving at full speed, and the left-back position sits at the center of José Mourinho’s squad renovation. The club plans to keep Álvaro Carreras as backup behind new signing Marc Cucurella, while Fran García appears headed for the exit door.
The Cucurella bet
Cucurella arrived from Chelsea for a reported €55 million on a six-year contract, with the deal announced around June 15, 2026. That’s a significant outlay for a left-back, roughly in line with what Real Madrid paid Benfica for Carreras just a year earlier at €50 million.
Real Madrid watched several long-term defensive pillars depart, including Dani Carvajal and David Alaba. Mourinho, who was appointed head coach in June 2026 on a deal running through 2029, needed to rebuild the backline almost from scratch.
Carreras stays, García goes
Álvaro Carreras, who joined from Benfica for €50 million in 2025, reportedly faced a difficult first season adapting to life at the Bernabéu. Despite those challenges, the club sees enough potential to keep him around as Cucurella’s primary backup and competitor.
Fran García appears to be the odd man out. Negotiations are reportedly in progress to send him to Real Betis for approximately €10 million.
Mourinho’s broader overhaul
The left-back shuffle is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Real Madrid’s summer 2026 transfer window has been aggressive, featuring notable free transfers including Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté.
Konaté addresses the center-back void left by Alaba’s departure. The contract length tells its own story: a six-year deal for Cucurella signals that Real Madrid views him as the long-term solution, and a three-year deal through 2029 for Mourinho suggests the club is giving him genuine runway to build something.
