Real Madrid just spent €20 million to create a problem most clubs would love to have. The Spanish giants confirmed the signing of Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on July 5, locking him into a contract through 2030. The catch: Trent Alexander-Arnold already plays that position.
Two right-backs, two very different skill sets
Alexander-Arnold, who arrived in Madrid during the summer 2025 window following Dani Carvajal’s departure, is one of football’s most creative defenders. His passing range from the back is closer to a midfielder’s than a traditional full-back’s.
Dumfries is the opposite archetype. The Dutchman built his reputation at Inter Milan as a physically dominant, defensively reliable presence. He wins aerial duels, he tracks runners, and he provides the kind of structural solidity that lets more attacking players take risks.
Mourinho’s potential tactical solutions
One option is shifting to a back three or back five system. Dumfries thrived as a right wing-back in Inter’s 3-5-2 formation, covering the entire flank with his engine and physicality. Alexander-Arnold could tuck inside into a hybrid midfield role. In this setup, Dumfries handles the defensive width while Alexander-Arnold operates as a deep-lying playmaker who drifts into central areas to dictate tempo.
Another possibility involves pushing Alexander-Arnold into an outright midfield position. Mourinho could formalize what many have long suspected: that Alexander-Arnold’s best position might not be right-back at all. Dropping him into a central or right-sided midfield role would preserve his creative influence while letting Dumfries lock down the defensive flank behind him.
The bigger picture in Madrid’s rebuild
The Dumfries deal, at roughly $29.1 million, represents solid value for a proven defender entering his prime years at the top level. Carvajal’s departure left a genuine hole in Madrid’s defensive structure. Alexander-Arnold filled it with flair but not necessarily with the defensive consistency that Carvajal provided in his best seasons. Dumfries addresses that gap directly.
