Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign kicks off on September 8 against Inter Milan, and José Mourinho is working with something closer to a skeleton crew than a galáctico squad. Ten players are unavailable for the league-phase opener at Santiago Bernabéu.
The absences span suspensions and injuries. Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler, and Bernardo Silva are all suspended, while Aurélien Tchouaméni, Éder Militão, Rodrygo, and Ferland Mendy are sidelined with injuries.
A midfield held together by one man
Federico Valverde is the sole senior midfielder available to Mourinho.
Jude Bellingham may be pressed into a deeper midfield role to compensate for the absence of dedicated options.
Defensive depth stretched thin
Ferland Mendy’s situation tells its own story. Not only is the left-back injured, but Real Madrid omitted him entirely from the Champions League squad list submitted in early September 2026. New signing Sergio Martínez has been registered in his place, signaling that the club views Mendy’s availability this season as unreliable at best.
A pattern, not a blip
In one particularly brutal stretch, the club recorded 47 separate injury cases and lost more than 1,100 days of player availability.
Managerial turnover has compounded the issue. Each new coach brings different physical demands, different tactical systems, and different ideas about rotation. Mourinho inherited a squad already bearing the scars of previous campaigns, and the bill has come due before his first Champions League match has even started.
What this means for the Inter Milan match
Mourinho’s reputation was built partly on making limited resources punch above their weight. Porto in 2004, Inter in 2010. But those were projects built over time with squads shaped to his specifications.
The likely deployment of Bellingham in midfield, combined with academy or fringe players filling multiple positions, means Madrid’s gameplan will need to be pragmatic.
