Romania is using Blockchain technology for voting in the 2024 presidential elections. The system operates with the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), which connects 27 European countries.

Romania secures the leadership for the use of Blockchain in the voting system for the 2024 presidential elections. 

Today, in fact, the Permanent Electoral Authority of Romania (ROAP) has started using this technology to monitor and count the votes.

Anyone will be able to follow, monitor, and verify the vote count on the Romanian blockchain system in real-time. The operation involves each vote being verified through complex computer codes.

Not only, the Romanian blockchain voting system works with the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), which connects 27 European countries. 

In this regard, the special telecommunications service (STS) has declared:

“This cutting-edge technological implementation aims to strengthen the resilience of the Romanian electoral system by ensuring traceability and increasing trust in data integrity. Additionally, for the first time, the digital fingerprints of these data will be protected in the blockchain network of the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure developed by the European Commission, providing an additional layer of security and traceability.”

Romania and the use case of Blockchain in the voting system

Romania is therefore live testing the use case of Blockchain technology in the election system.

In this regard, Dr. X (@AnduTabacu) wanted to describe this event as follows:

“Romania uses blockchain to validate the presence of the presidential vote. Today Romania has: – MultiversX – a top 100 cryptocurrency company, the most scalable and the second most decentralized blockchain globally (after $ETH); – ICI – the Romanian National Institute for Informatics that has been building on the chain for several years – STS and other government institutions that are joining or completely migrating to the blockchain; – Countless start-ups and companies that are building on the chain.

This is just the beginning of the new phase of blockchain. Within 6 years, I believe that every government and every major institution will rely on blockchain. In a country like Romania, where corruption is deep, blockchain could change everything. But it could also encounter resistance. Trump’s plan and Elon Musk’s D.O.G.E

Recently, it emerged that the elected President of the USA, Donald Trump, and Elon Musk’s D.O.G.E are studying a federal voting system on Blockchain. 

At the moment, the platforms involved in the new project would be Cardano, X, Hyperledger, and Hedera. 
Not only that, if the plan were to proceed, this implies a new legislation that requires all the States of the USA to implement the online electronic voting platform eVote.
