Seattle plans Juneteenth events for US vs Australia World Cup match

Here’s a scheduling coincidence that Seattle organizers decided to lean into rather than ignore. The US men’s national team plays Australia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 19, the same day the country observes Juneteenth. Instead of treating these as competing events, Seattle’s local organizing committee is fusing them into a single celebration of Black history, culture, and international soccer.

What the events actually look like

The Local Organizing Committee for Seattle FIFA World Cup 2026, known as SeattleFWC26, is orchestrating the effort. Public celebrations and watch parties are planned for Waterfront Park, Westlake Park, and Seattle Center, three of the city’s most prominent gathering spots.

The programming goes well beyond putting a match on a big screen. The day will include live performances and marches designed to honor Juneteenth’s significance as a celebration of Black liberation and resilience.

Seattle is one of 11 host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Regional watch parties are also scheduled in Spokane and Renton, extending the celebration beyond Seattle proper. Some of these satellite events will explicitly incorporate Juneteenth themes.

The ARTE NOIR partnership and Juneteenth Design Contest

One of the more interesting details is the Juneteenth Design Contest, a collaboration between SeattleFWC26 and ARTE NOIR. The contest invites Black artists to submit work that could become official artwork for matchday.

ARTE NOIR is a Seattle-based organization focused on celebrating Black art and culture.

Why this pairing works

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It became a federal holiday in 2021. The tournament’s arrival in the US, Canada, and Mexico in 2026 marks the first time since 1994 that the US has hosted the event.
