Sébastien Pocognoli emerges as frontrunner for Scotland boss

Scotland’s search for a new national team manager appears to be nearing its conclusion. Sébastien Pocognoli, a 39-year-old Belgian coach, has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of the Scottish national team.

The Scottish Football Association, led by Chief Executive Ian Maxwell, is reportedly expected to confirm the appointment as early as the week of August 17, 2026. If finalized, Pocognoli would become the second overseas coach in modern Scottish football history, following Berti Vogts, whose tenure ran from 2002 to 2004.

From left-back to league champion

Pocognoli’s playing career saw the former left-back earn 13 senior caps for Belgium, spending time at clubs including Genk, AZ Alkmaar, Standard Liège, Hannover 96, West Bromwich Albion, and Brighton & Hove Albion before transitioning into coaching.

He began his coaching career in youth positions at Union SG, Genk, and the Belgium U18 team before his breakthrough as a senior manager at Union SG in July 2024. In his first season, Pocognoli guided Union Saint-Gilloise to their first Belgian Pro League title in 90 years, earning him the Belgian Coach of the Year award.

AS Monaco came calling in October 2025, handing him the reins at one of Ligue 1’s most storied clubs. Pocognoli was dismissed on June 1, 2026, after finishing seventh in the league.

Why Scotland is looking abroad

The decision to pursue a foreign coach signals a shift in the SFA’s thinking after Steve Clarke’s seven-year tenure, which took Scotland to Euro 2024. Born on August 1, 1987, Pocognoli would bring a younger profile to the role, and the SFA is preparing for Scotland’s upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign, which kicks off in late September 2026.

Pocognoli’s tactical approach, influenced by Louis van Gaal during his playing days at AZ Alkmaar, favors a 3-4-1-2 formation that emphasizes high-intensity counter-pressing and possession-based play. His title-winning Union Saint-Gilloise side was built on organization and pressing, getting the maximum from a roster that lacked the individual star power of Belgium’s traditional powerhouses.

The immediate task would be the Nations League fixtures beginning in late September, giving Pocognoli roughly five to six weeks to familiarize himself with the squad and implement his ideas.
