Tata Consultancy Services just made one of the largest AI infrastructure bets in Indian history. The IT giant’s data center subsidiary, HyperVault, announced plans to develop a massive artificial intelligence data center campus spanning 264 acres in Hyderabad’s Future City district in Telangana.
The project carries an investment commitment of up to Rs 70,000 crore (roughly $8.2B) from HyperVault and its partners, with a target capacity of 1 gigawatt.
What TCS is building
The Hyderabad campus will be purpose-built for high-density GPU deployments designed for training, inference, and advanced AI workloads. The target customers are frontier AI companies and hyperscalers.
TCS is framing this as part of its broader “Infrastructure-to-Intelligence” strategy.
The project didn’t materialize overnight. Discussions between Telangana state officials and Tata leadership reportedly took shape at the Davos meeting in January 2026, with the formal announcement following months of negotiations. HyperVault already had momentum heading into the deal, having previously secured Rs 18,000 crore from private equity firm TPG to fuel its data center ambitions.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called the project “historic” and set an ambitious completion target of June 2, 2028. That date coincides with Telangana Formation Day.
The sustainability pitch
The campus will incorporate green energy solutions and a water-neutral design, according to the announcement.
The project is also expected to generate up to 7,000 direct and indirect jobs.
India’s AI infrastructure race
India offers several advantages for data center operators: a deep talent pool, relatively lower construction costs compared to the US or Europe, and a government that’s increasingly eager to subsidize strategic tech investments. The Hyderabad project addresses land and power supply by securing 264 acres and committing to green energy sourcing.
TPG’s prior investment of Rs 18,000 crore into HyperVault indicates conviction in HyperVault’s ability to compete with established data center operators.
Reliance Industries, Adani Group, and several global hyperscalers have all announced or expanded data center operations in India. TCS’s 1 GW target is large enough to matter.
