Tesla is preparing to deploy its gold, steering-wheel-free Cybercab vehicles into its Texas robotaxi fleet, with an official launch date of September 3 in Austin. The two-seater pods represent Tesla’s first purpose-built autonomous vehicle, a meaningful upgrade from the modified Model Y sedans that have been handling rides since the company quietly rolled out its robotaxi service in mid-2025.
Hundreds of Cybercabs have already been staged at Gigafactory Texas. Public-road testing in Austin kicked off in June, with employee preview rides following in July, building toward what Tesla clearly hopes will be a splashy debut.
From retrofitted sedans to purpose-built pods
Tesla’s robotaxi journey in Texas has been an exercise in crawl-walk-run. The service launched in mid-2025 using Model Y vehicles retrofitted for autonomous driving, initially with safety operators behind the wheel. Unsupervised rides, meaning no human backup driver, only began in early 2026.
By April 2026, the service had expanded beyond Austin to Dallas and Houston. But the fleet has remained modest. As of late August, Tesla has roughly 270 registered Model Y robotaxis across Texas, with only a low-dozens count actively operating at any given time.
Tesla registering 79 new robotaxis in a single day recently suggests acceleration, but the gap remains wide compared to Waymo, which has been operating commercial robotaxi services in multiple US cities for years.
The Cybercab is designed to close that gap, or at least start to. Production began at Gigafactory Texas in early 2026, with confirmation coming in April. The vehicle achieved Level 4 self-certification under Texas law effective May 28, 2026, meaning the vehicle is legally cleared to operate without any human controls in defined conditions.
What the Cybercab actually is
The Cybercab is a compact, gold-colored two-seater pod with no steering wheel, no pedals, and no pretense of being a regular car. Texas’s self-certification framework allowed Tesla to validate its own vehicle’s readiness for Level 4 operation rather than waiting for a federal agency to sign off.
The competitive landscape
Tesla entering the purpose-built robotaxi market puts it in direct competition with Waymo, which currently operates in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin itself, among other markets.
The two companies took opposite approaches. Waymo started with full autonomy and painstakingly expanded its operational domain over years. Tesla started with driver-assistance features sold to millions of customers, collected real-world driving data, and is now working toward full autonomy.
