Key Highlights
- Recent aerial surveillance reveals the steel framework of Tesla’s specialized Optimus manufacturing facility at Giga Texas is approaching completion, approximately six months following initial groundwork.
- Concrete pouring operations are underway across three elevated floors while foundation activities progress at ground level concurrently.
- Tesla has placed an inaugural large-scale production order for approximately 5,000 Optimus robots with its supplier network, marking the first order at thousand-unit scale.
- The electric vehicle manufacturer is conducting comprehensive supply chain evaluations with partners located throughout Chinese metropolitan areas including Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Ningbo.
- The Texas manufacturing complex aims to achieve high-capacity Optimus production by summer 2027, while the Fremont pilot facility currently manufactures Gen 3 robots at scale.
The specialized Optimus factory under construction at Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas location is approaching the final phases of structural steel installation, based on aerial documentation shared Thursday by independent observer Joe Tegtmeyer.
Within the recorded footage, Tegtmeyer observed that the structural steel installation remains approximately five column grid sections from connecting with the building’s northern perimeter beam. This positions the primary framework near finalization, about half a year since Tesla initiated construction on the North Campus location during late March.
The aerial documentation additionally reveals concrete placement occurring across three elevated levels simultaneously as work crews install reinforcement bars and complete grade beam foundation pours at the base level. Tesla employed this same concurrent scheduling methodology during construction of the original Giga Texas structure to minimize project duration.
This manufacturing complex represents one component of a North Campus expansion exceeding 5.2 million square feet at Giga Texas. The structure will extend approximately 4,000 feet lengthwise adjacent to the current automotive production facility.
Supplier Evaluations and Large-Scale Orders Indicate Production Transition
In addition to the physical construction advancement, emerging indicators suggest Tesla is accelerating supplier-side preparations. The automaker has recently placed a new procurement order for roughly 5,000 Optimus robots with its manufacturing partners. This represents the inaugural mass production commitment at thousand-unit magnitude, succeeding previous trial manufacturing orders numbering only several hundred units.
Simultaneously, Tesla is performing active evaluations of its Optimus supply network throughout China, conducting site visits with manufacturers across Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Xiamen. Sources within the industry indicate the pairing of supplier evaluations with substantial orders demonstrates Optimus has transitioned from experimental prototype phase to scalable production methodology.
Located adjacent to the Optimus manufacturing facility within the same campus footprint is Terafab, the collaborative Tesla and SpaceX semiconductor manufacturing operation. This facility will produce the processing chips powering deployed Optimus robots. Maintaining robot assembly and semiconductor production within the same geographic area represents a strategic decision to minimize transportation duration and supply chain interruptions between these interconnected operations.
Tesla has not revised its production schedule beyond the previously announced objective of activating high-capacity Optimus manufacturing at the Texas location during summer 2027.
Fremont Operations Continue During Texas Construction Phase
The smaller-scale pilot production line at Fremont commenced mass manufacturing of the current Gen 3 robot model in January. This facility is projected to produce tens of thousands of robots throughout the current year, primarily to collect operational field data Tesla requires for software refinement before the Giga Texas facility scales production.
Elon Musk has established a long-range production objective of 10 million Optimus robots annually for the Texas facility operating at maximum capacity. This production volume would substantially surpass the one million unit pilot production line Tesla is establishing independently at Fremont.
The Chinese manufacturing enterprises receiving Optimus procurement orders predominantly consist of established manufacturers from household appliance and precision mechanical manufacturing industries, including Sanhua Intelligent Control, Tuopu Group, and Xinjian Transmission.
Tesla’s 5,000-robot supplier procurement order has received final approval, and the comprehensive evaluation process across Chinese supply chain collaborators is characterized as forthcoming.
