Tired of Steam and App Store Fees? New Gaming Protocol Offers Alternative

2 months ago 31

The Distribution of Games (DoG) Protocol wants to change how games get released and rewarded. It recently released a whitepaper outlining a permissionless system for distributing games outside dominant platforms like Steam or app stores.

TLDR

  • The Distribution of Games (DoG) Protocol released a whitepaper for a permissionless protocol to distribute games
  • The protocol starts with a white label desktop app gaming communities can use instead of Steam/App Store
  • Developers can easily add rewarded quests to games to reward players with money for tasks
  • Treasure will be the first partner, building a desktop app powered by the DoG Protocol
  • The DoG Protocol founding team also created the Flame wallet and game launcher

The DoG Protocol is initially launching with a white label desktop application gaming communities can leverage. This allows developers to distribute titles directly to their players rather than relying on middlemen platforms. These platforms charge high fees up to 30%, drastically cutting into game budgets.

The protocol also lets developers seamlessly build rewarded quests into their games. This means players can earn real money for completing specified challenges and in-game tasks.

Treasure, a quickly expanding web3 gaming ecosystem, will be the genesis partner integrating the DoG Protocol for their own desktop app coming later in 2024. Powered by the $MAGIC token, Treasure recently shared plans for the decentralized Treasure Chain network of games and game-specific chains.

For Treasure co-founder Karel Vuong, the DoG Protocol will help them “bring gaming experiences to the masses” beyond just browser-based web3 titles. He said the protocol will aid in releasing their ecosystem-tailored desktop launcher.

Ross Krasner, Founding Member of the DoG Protocol, shared excitement about Treasure’s engaged community and game developer base. He said they exemplify a tight-knit gaming ecosystem that can thrive with community-owned distribution.

Krasner also emphasized that the 30% fees charged by Steam, Apple, and Google come at the expense of game creators and players. The DoG Protocol wants to shift that power dynamic back into the hands of gaming communities.

The DoG founding team previously created the multi-chain Flame wallet and game launcher to easily access web3 games. So they bring practical experience empowering game discovery and play.

By enabling community ownership of distribution, the DoG Protocol ultimately wants to foster sustainable economies where game developers, players, and distributors all earn rewards. If the partnership with Treasure gains steam, it could demonstrate a promising model for aligning incentives around gaming engagement.
