Here’s something that would have sounded absurd five years ago: a meaningful chunk of FIFA World Cup tickets were purchased with stablecoins on a blockchain. Not as a gimmick. Not as a proof of concept. As a straightforward payment method that thousands of fans actually chose to use.
Uquid Tickets, a blockchain-enabled ticketing platform, processed just under 5,000 ticket sales for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Over 65% of those transactions were settled in USDT on the TRON network, using the TRC-20 token standard. That makes TRON the dominant rail for what might be one of the largest real-world crypto payment events tied to a single sporting tournament.
The numbers behind the noise
Uquid Tickets launched in March 2026 and formally announced its TRON integration on April 13, 2026. So the platform had only a few months of runway before the World Cup kicked off, which makes the volume more notable.
During the tournament, Uquid reported a 450% surge in platform traffic.
The platform works in a fairly intuitive way. Users pay with crypto, blockchain confirmations process, and digital tickets are delivered. No intermediary bank transfers, no currency conversion headaches for international fans.
Why TRON, and why stablecoins
TRON’s dominance in this use case isn’t surprising if you’ve been paying attention. The network has quietly become the backbone of stablecoin transfers, particularly USDT, thanks to low fees and fast transaction speeds. For a ticketing platform serving international buyers who need certainty on price and speed, TRON checks both boxes.
The 65% figure is telling because it suggests users weren’t just defaulting to whatever payment method was available. They were actively choosing USDT on TRON over other options.
Uquid itself has been around since 2016, operating in the crypto-enabled e-commerce and payments space. The World Cup essentially gave it the highest-profile stress test imaginable.
The bigger picture for crypto payments
The global live-event ticketing market is projected to exceed $900 billion by 2030. If even a small percentage of that volume migrates to crypto rails, the implications for stablecoin usage and on-chain activity are significant.
It’s worth noting, though, that this initiative has been largely promoted through Uquid’s own channels. Independent verification and third-party analysis remain limited as of late July 2026. Nearly 5,000 tickets is meaningful but still a fraction of total World Cup ticket sales. This is a proof of concept at scale, not a market takeover.
