President Donald Trump announced on June 11 that he had called off planned military strikes against Iran, claiming that high-level negotiations had produced a draft agreement that could end the conflict. The proposed deal reportedly includes provisions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping and impose new constraints on Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump indicated a signing could happen in Europe as soon as this weekend. Bitcoin responded by pushing toward $74,000.
The deal, and the skepticism around it
Iranian sources have not confirmed approval of the draft text. Trump has made similar claims of imminent progress since March 2026. Each time, Iranian state media has met the assertions with varying degrees of skepticism.
Why crypto cares about geopolitics in the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of global oil transit. Crypto has shown a strong correlation with military and diplomatic developments related to the Iran conflict throughout 2026.
The US government has been aggressively targeting Iranian-linked digital assets as part of its sanctions enforcement regime. Hundreds of millions in crypto holdings have reportedly been frozen, and reports suggest Iran may be holding up to $7.7 billion in cryptocurrency as a sanctions evasion tool.
That $7.7 billion figure, if accurate, would make Iran one of the larger state-level holders of crypto assets globally. Any deal involving sanctions relief could theoretically unlock a significant pool of crypto capital.
What this means for crypto investors
A comprehensive agreement that includes sanctions relief could release billions in frozen or restricted digital assets back into circulation. A deal that maintains or tightens crypto-specific sanctions while relaxing others could accelerate the bifurcation between “compliant” and “non-compliant” crypto ecosystems, with assets carrying any Iranian exposure facing liquidity discounts.
Watch for Iranian official confirmation of the draft text as the next catalyst. Without it, this remains a one-sided announcement.
