Tunisia has turned to Hervé Renard to rescue its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. The French coach takes over after the national team’s 5-1 thrashing by Sweden in their opening match, a result that cost predecessor Sabri Lamouchi his job.
Renard is expected to link up with the squad in Mexico ahead of Tunisia’s next group stage fixture against Japan.
A familiar face in African football
Renard is no stranger to coaching on the continent. His resume includes stints leading Zambia, Angola, Ivory Coast, and Morocco.
He guided Zambia to Africa Cup of Nations glory. He later took Morocco to the 2018 World Cup, earning qualification under his watch.
More recently, Renard coached Saudi Arabia, a role he departed from in April 2026 before the World Cup began.
Why Lamouchi was dismissed
Sabri Lamouchi was let go almost immediately after the Sweden defeat. The appointment of Renard was announced on June 15-16, 2026.
