The UAE has been quietly running one of the most intense air defense operations in recent Middle Eastern history. Since early March 2026, the country’s military has detected 1,422 Iranian drones, intercepting 1,342 of them. Every one of the eight cruise missiles fired at UAE territory was shot down. Of 238 ballistic missiles launched, 221 were intercepted.
How the campaign unfolded
The aerial attacks began as Iranian retaliation following US-Israeli military strikes on February 28, 2026. Iran, perceiving Gulf states as hosts for American military infrastructure, directed a concentrated campaign of UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at the UAE in the weeks that followed.
The UAE Ministry of Defense has maintained an unusual degree of public transparency throughout, releasing footage of real-time interceptions and detailing its engagement tactics.
The hardware doing the work includes F-16 Block 60 fighters and Mirage 2000-9 jets, integrated into a broader layered air defense architecture.
The intercept rate for drones sits at roughly 94%. Eighty drones reached land or facilities. The UAE has reported two fatalities among its armed forces, along with civilian risks from debris falling on populated areas. The Ministry has noted some discrepancy in assessing whether damage came from direct impacts or falling fragments from intercepted missiles.
Why the UAE is absorbing the brunt of this
Iran views the UAE as a key node in the US military’s regional presence. The sheer volume of projectiles launched, over 1,600 if you combine UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, reflects that calculus.
Ballistic missiles are the most serious concern in that mix. The UAE stopping 221 out of 238 is a strong performance by any historical standard, but 17 ballistic missiles reaching their targets represents genuine damage potential that the Ministry has been measured in discussing publicly.
The two armed forces fatalities represent the first direct combat deaths the UAE has suffered from Iranian fire. The Ministry’s framing has emphasized national sovereignty and defense readiness.
