Two decentralized exchanges have quietly cornered a market that didn’t meaningfully exist two years ago. Uniswap and PancakeSwap now handle 96.1% of all tokenized commodity trading volume on DEXs, processing $678.2 million worth of transactions over the past 30 days.
Gold runs the show
The tokenized commodities category sounds broad, but it’s really a gold story. Gold-backed tokens account for roughly 80% or more of daily DEX volume in the segment, with Paxos Gold (PAXG) and Tether Gold (XAUt) serving as the two dominant assets.
Both tokens represent ownership claims on physical gold. PAXG is issued by Paxos, a regulated financial infrastructure company, while XAUt comes from Tether, the company behind the world’s largest stablecoin. Each token is backed by one troy ounce of gold held in reserve, giving crypto-native traders exposure to the metal without touching a futures contract or an ETF.
Recent daily spot DEX volumes for tokenized commodities have hovered in the low millions, around $2.41 million on a recent snapshot day. The $678.2 million monthly aggregate reflects consistent, steady trading rather than a handful of whale-driven spikes.
Assets under management across the broader tokenized commodities category have reached several billion dollars.
Why Uniswap and PancakeSwap dominate
Uniswap, built on Ethereum, benefits from the deepest liquidity pools in DeFi and the largest user base among decentralized exchanges. PancakeSwap, which started on BNB Chain, offers lower transaction fees and has expanded aggressively into multi-chain territory.
Both platforms have invested in infrastructure to support tokenized real-world assets. As market caps for gold-backed tokens have climbed, so have the liquidity pools dedicated to trading them. The remaining 3.9% of volume is scattered across a long tail of smaller exchanges, none of which has managed to build the critical mass needed to challenge the two leaders.
The macro backdrop
Gold-backed token market caps have risen notably in recent months, tracking closely with spot gold prices. The broader trend of real-world asset tokenization has been one of the more durable narratives in crypto over the past year, encompassing everything from US Treasury bills to real estate.
For DeFi participants, the growing acceptance of tokenized commodities creates new composability opportunities. Gold tokens can serve as collateral in lending protocols, be paired in liquidity pools, or used in yield strategies. That utility layer doesn’t exist in traditional gold markets, where an ounce of gold sitting in a London vault can’t simultaneously earn yield in a lending pool.
The concentration of volume on just two platforms also introduces a fragility: if either Uniswap or PancakeSwap experienced a significant technical issue, the vast majority of on-chain commodity liquidity could evaporate temporarily. The combination of regulated issuers like Paxos and battle-tested DEX infrastructure makes tokenized gold one of the more palatable on-ramps for traditional finance players exploring DeFi.
