Verizon reportedly signs $1B deal with Google for data center build

Verizon has reportedly signed a $1 billion agreement with Google to build a data center, a move that would mark a significant strategic reversal for the telecom giant.

This is a company that sold off its entire data center portfolio to Equinix for $3.6 billion back in 2017. At the time, the message was clear. Verizon wanted out of the physical infrastructure business to focus on its core wireless and fiber operations.

What the deal signals about AI infrastructure demand

Google has been on a data center spending spree of its own. The search giant invested over $1 billion in a Kansas City facility in 2024 and committed to another major expansion in North Carolina in March 2026.

Verizon and Google aren’t strangers to collaboration. The two companies announced a 5G edge computing infrastructure partnership back in December 2021, bringing Google Cloud’s computing capabilities closer to Verizon’s network edge. A data center deal would be a natural, if much larger, extension of that relationship.

The crypto angle that isn’t there

This partnership, at least as currently structured, doesn’t appear to have any Web3 component. That’s notable because it stands in contrast to the approach taken by other major tech and infrastructure players. Companies like Core Scientific pivoted from traditional data center operations to crypto mining and then back toward AI hosting. Marathon Digital and Riot Platforms have been expanding their data center footprints specifically for Bitcoin mining.

Verizon and Google appear to be keeping this squarely in the traditional enterprise and AI lane. No blockchain protocols, no mining partnerships, no tokenized infrastructure plays.

What investors should watch

The verification status of this deal is worth monitoring closely. As of now, neither Verizon nor Google has made a formal public announcement confirming a $1 billion data center agreement.
