Virgil van Dijk withdraws from penalty due to discomfort, confirms Koeman

Virgil van Dijk, the captain of the Netherlands, declined to take a penalty kick in the shootout that ended his team’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. Head coach Ronald Koeman confirmed the reason was physical discomfort.

The Dutch were eliminated by Morocco in the round of 32. The Netherlands and Morocco fought through a tense match that ultimately required a penalty shootout to determine who advanced. Van Dijk won the coin toss and chose the end nearest to the traveling Dutch supporters.

Koeman stated after the match that van Dijk felt discomfort and withdrew from the shootout rotation as a result. The nature and severity of the discomfort have not been specified in detail.

Van Dijk’s decision has drawn sharp criticism from fans and media alike. The core argument is straightforward: if you can stand on the pitch for 120 minutes, you should be able to strike a ball from 12 yards.

The criticism also carries a historical charge. The Netherlands was eliminated from the 2022 World Cup in the quarterfinals against Argentina, also in a penalty shootout.

Ronald Koeman confirmed the discomfort explanation without apparent hesitation, which suggests the coaching staff was aware of and accepted van Dijk’s withdrawal before the shootout began. Saying a player felt “discomfort” without elaborating is the kind of vague medical language that invites more scrutiny, not less.

At 35, this may well have been van Dijk’s final World Cup. If so, the last image of his international tournament career is one of stepping aside rather than stepping up.
