In response to the growing pressures from the community for a change in leadership, Vitalik Buterin reaffirmed his exclusive authority in the Ethereum Foundation, condemning the harassment against the executives and announcing plans for future management reforms.

Let’s see all the details in this article.

Buterin condemns the threats and reiterates his control over the strategic decisions of the Ethereum Foundation

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum and a key figure in the blockchain ecosystem, has recently faced a wave of criticism and pressure to change the leadership of the Ethereum Foundation.

In a post published on January 21 on the platform X, Buterin firmly reiterated his exclusive authority.

Rejecting consequently the requests of the community to appoint a new leader and strongly condemning the harassment directed at the current members of the foundation.

In recent months, some members of the Ethereum community have expressed dissatisfaction with the management of the foundation, pushing for the promotion of Danny Ryan, a prominent developer and central figure in the technical evolution of the network.

Ryan played a crucial role in the transition of Ethereum from a proof-of-work (PoW) based system to proof-of-stake (PoS). A breakthrough that improved the energy sustainability of the network and strengthened security.

The supporters of Ryan highlight his technical ability and strategic vision as the main reasons for a change at the top.

However, Buterin emphasized that every decision regarding leadership within the foundation remains solely his responsibility.

Internal tensions and the dark side of the community

The controversy over leadership has also highlighted deeper issues within the Ethereum community.

Aya Miyaguchi, executive director of the foundation since 2018, has been the target of personal attacks and online harassment, including extreme comments that have crossed the line of decency.

In his post Buterin explains the following:

“Some of the best Ethereum developers have expressed their disgust at the negative atmosphere that is spreading. This toxicity not only makes my work more difficult, but also undermines the foundations on which Ethereum was built.”

Projects for the future of the fondazione

Despite his strong defense of the current leadership, Buterin hinted at plans to make significant changes in the management structure of the Ethereum Foundation.

On January 18, it announced a series of objectives to improve communication between the foundation and the ecosystem developers.

These objectives include supporting creators of decentralized applications (DApp), strengthening privacy, and promoting decentralizzazione.

However, Buterin clarified that the foundation does not intend to take on a central role in leading the ecosystem nor engage in political lobbying activities.

This approach reflects his vision of a decentralized Ethereum, where key decisions are made collectively by the community rather than by a single central entity.

In other words, the controversy over the leadership of the Ethereum Foundation highlights the challenges that emerge when a decentralized community attempts to balance governance and responsibility.

While Vitalik Buterin continues to maintain exclusive control over the foundation, his statements suggest a more structured future with the introduction of a board of directors.

However, to maintain the success and cohesion of the Ethereum ecosystem, it will be crucial to address issues related to community toxicity. Thus ensuring that every voice is heard without undermining the fundamental principles of respect and collaboration.
