WeWork shares tumble over 10% amid unverified $5B fundraising claims

A fundraising paradox

The company’s history with large capital injections is not exactly a highlight reel. SoftBank poured roughly $6 billion into WeWork in January 2019 at a valuation of $47 billion. The fanfare lasted about nine months before a disastrous IPO attempt unraveled the whole story, forcing SoftBank back to the table with a $5 billion rescue package in October 2019 just to keep the lights on.

WeWork eventually went public through a SPAC merger in 2021, carrying an enterprise value of around $9 billion. Two years later, it filed for bankruptcy. The company that emerged from that process is now substantially controlled by Yardi Systems, which holds a roughly 60% stake in the restructured entity.

WeWork India offers a useful parallel. The separate Indian entity completed a $338 million IPO in October 2025 and received a lukewarm reception from the market on its debut.
